Tiger Longwing – Heliconius ismenius [1]
The Elevated Earth
No need for soil or stone,
when a green continent
unfurls
beneath your feet.
You moor your amber ship
to
this ribbed and waxen dock,
tethered by sunlight
to a high,
swaying floor.
To you, the leaf is the earth;
firm, vast, and breathing
under the weight of your silk.
Artist’s Statement
In this study of the Tiger Longwing, I sought to collapse the distance between the insect and its environment. By framing the leaf not as a mere perch, but as a vast, structural “ground,” the image explores the gravity of a creature often perceived as weightless. It is a portrait of a private continent, where the horizon is defined by a serrated edge and the earth is made of living chlorophyll.
